STORYLINE

Turkish drama series “The Innocent” (Masum in Turkish) premiered in 2017. It is inspired by the American television programme “The Fugitive.” The programme centres on a guy who is falsely charged with a crime and his tireless pursuit to defend his reputation while avoiding capture. The plot is compelling and intriguing.

The series’ main character is Cevdet (Haluk Bilginer), a devout and devoted husband and father who enjoys living in harmony with his wife Suna (Nur Sürer) and their two children Emre (Ali Atay) and Nisan (Okan Yalabak). Cevdet is regarded in his community and a successful biology teacher at a high school.

When something dreadful happens, everything is profoundly altered. On a night out with his buddies, Cevdet gets into a fight and, in the ensuing commotion, kills a man by mistake. Cevdet decides to conceal the accident because he feels so guilty and is afraid of the repercussions, and he thinks that reporting the incident to the police would just ruin his family’s lives.

Cevdet’s life, however, takes a terrifying turn when he is mistakenly named as a suspect in a different murder case that took place around the same time as the accident. He becomes the main suspect in the homicide case when the police begin looking for him.

When Cevdet is falsely accused of a crime, he ends up on the run. He must now make a crucial decision that will affect the rest of his life: expose the truth or remain in hiding and risk losing everything he values.

As the drama progresses, it introduces additional significant people whose fates get entangled with Cevdet’s. Mehmet, a tenacious and committed policeman (played by Serkan Keskin), sets out to apprehend Cevdet because he thinks he’s the culprit who killed everyone. On the other side, Feride, a prosecutor (played by Müjde Ar), starts to find contradictions in the evidence, which causes her to question Cevdet’s guilt.

“The Innocent” depicts the emotional and psychological toll that being falsely accused has on Cevdet and his family throughout the entire series. As he searches for proof of his innocence while trying to escape being apprehended, Cevdet’s journey is full of suspense.

In order to survive and learn the truth about the murder he was charged with, Cevdet must overcome many obstacles and form unlikely relationships. The show deftly handles morality, justice, and the extent people will go to defend their loved ones as themes.

“The Innocent” won praise from critics for its gripping plot, outstanding acting, and capacity to keep viewers on the edge of their seats throughout its run. The series continues to be one of the outstanding Turkish dramas that grabbed people all over the world with its gripping plot and emotional depth.
